Metal Refresh: The Kitchen Game-Changer

There is a moment in every home when the desire for change arrives, and the kitchen in particular is a common space to scratch this itch.

It’s a room we interact with on a day to day basis across multiple moments and touch points, so it’s understandable that we’re often critiquing its potential for improvement.

Many people are waiting for the chance to renovate and bring that dream kitchen to life with new character, style, cabinetry and stone. But there could be a solution that’s far more immediate while still carrying that ‘refresh energy’ that you could be craving.

Metals.

Refreshing Your Metals

Considered kitchen hardware and tapware can completely alter the atmosphere of a space. It is one of the most effective ways to elevate a kitchen without undertaking a full renovation, and one of the few updates capable of shifting both the visual language and emotional experience of a room.

Like changing the jewellery with a classic black dress, the structure remains the same, but the expression becomes entirely different.

Kitchen Hardware - The Jewellery of the Home

The idea of hardware being the jewellery of the home is not new, but there is a reason designers return to the phrase time and time again.

Like jewellery, hardware is rarely essential to function. A cabinet could open with any old pull or leaver. A door will operate without something beautiful to grasp. Yet these are often the details in a kitchen that matter.

They may not change functionality but they do change the tone and mood of a space. Some would say that that in of itself has a huge utility function.

The pieces we choose to adorn in our homes reveal something about our taste, our values and the atmosphere we wish to cultivate. They are touched daily, noticed repeatedly and experienced more intimately than almost any other object in the room.

While stone, cabinetry and paint create the foundation, hardware provides the finishing layer. It introduces temperament, architecture and personality. Aged brass can ooze warmth and permanence. Bronze can bring depth. An oversized pull can add confidence. A hand-finished knob can introduce a sense of artistry.

Much like a treasured piece of jewellery, the best hardware is not chosen because it is on ‘trend’. It is chosen because it feels enduring and has a sense of ‘iconic’ timelessness to it.

Hardware transforms something ordinary into something worth noticing.

When approached this way, refreshing your hardware becomes less about renovation and more about refinement. A small edit with the ability to change the way an entire space is perceived.

Not all change has to be dramatic and fine tuning can sometimes be more powerful than replacement.

How to Choose Hardware With Character

Architectural kitchen hardware can transform even the simplest cabinetry into a statement feature.

When considering a kitchen refresh, look beyond trends and focus on form.

Ask yourself:

Does this piece have presence?

Would it still feel beautiful if it were sitting on a shelf?

Could it pass as a small sculpture?

You’re not looking for knobs and pulls, you’re looking for art.

The most enduring kitchen hardware often possesses one or more of these qualities:

Sculptural

Hardware that feels carved, rounded, softened or hand-finished.

Think organic forms, tactile edges and pieces that feel collected rather than manufactured.

Architectural

Hardware with strong geometry and structure.

Linear pulls, oversized proportions and forms inspired by architecture often bring a sense of confidence to a kitchen.

Eclectic

Unexpected materials or detailing.

Leather, timber, aged finishes, stone and artisanal craftsmanship can introduce personality without overwhelming a space.

Vintage-Inspired

Patina, character and a sense of history.

These pieces often soften newer kitchens and create depth that cannot be achieved through styling alone.

Refresh Your Metals: Choosing Kitchen Tapware

If hardware is the jewellery, tapware is the piece that pops.

When selecting kitchen tapware, consider the same principles you would apply to furniture or lighting.

Observe the silhouette and notice the clean lines or curves. Also consider the proportions.

The most memorable pieces often possess an element of exaggeration:

  • A generous swan neck

  • A distinctive lever handle

  • A bold industrial form

  • A refined European profile

  • An aged finish with character

But, depending on your own individual style and preference - I also love the idea of a ‘barely there’ tap - something that is so refined and minimalist it makes the kitchen feel sleek and even a little ‘un-kitchen-like’. Playing around with unexpected contrast can sometimes lead to even greater levels of elevation.

The Most Timeless Metal Finishes

While trends come and go, a handful of finishes consistently remain relevant.

Aged Brass

Warm, characterful and increasingly beautiful over time.

Polished or Brushed Nickel

Classic, elegant and adaptable across both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Bronze

Rich, sophisticated and architectural.

Stainless Steel

Clean, confident and enduring.

Matte Black

Graphic, edgy and modern when used thoughtfully.

The best finish is not necessarily the most fashionable. It is the one that complements the mood you are trying to cultivate for the long run.

Should You Choose Pulls, Knobs or Both?

One of the most common questions when refreshing kitchen hardware is whether to choose pulls, knobs or a combination of the two.

The answer is simpler than most people expect.

There is no rule that says a kitchen must have both pulls and knobs.

You can absolutely use only pulls.

You can absolutely use only knobs.

Some of the most refined kitchens commit to a single hardware style throughout, creating a sense of restraint and cohesion that allows the material, finish and form to take centre stage.

Where a combination becomes interesting is when it introduces hierarchy.

A knob feels like punctuation.

A pull feels more architectural.

When used together, they can create a layered composition that guides the eye through the room.

A classic approach is to use knobs on upper cabinetry and pulls on lower cabinetry. Another is to use knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. Both create variation while maintaining order.

The key is consistency.

Choose one finish and one design language.

If your pulls are soft and rounded, your knobs should feel related. If your pulls are geometric and architectural, your knobs should carry the same visual weight.

What tends to feel unsuccessful is mixing styles rather than mixing formats.

A traditional knob paired with an ultra-modern pull can feel disconnected. A sculptural collection used across both formats feels deliberate.

As a general rule, if your kitchen is already rich in texture, materiality or architectural detail, a single hardware style often feels strongest. If the kitchen is more restrained, introducing both knobs and pulls can create an additional layer of visual interest.

Like any good composition, the objective is not more elements.

It is creating a sense that every element belongs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is replacing kitchen hardware worth it?

Yes. Updating kitchen hardware is one of the most cost-effective ways to refresh a kitchen and create a noticeable visual transformation without renovating.

Should kitchen hardware match tapware?

Not always. Coordinating metals often creates a cohesive look, but mixing finishes can introduce depth and personality when done intentionally.

What is the most timeless kitchen hardware finish?

Aged brass, polished nickel and bronze continue to be among the most enduring finishes due to their versatility and longevity.

Can new tapware make a kitchen look more expensive?

Absolutely. High-quality kitchen tapware often acts as a focal point and can elevate the overall perception of the space.

The Beauty of Editing

There is a tendency to believe that transformation requires more, yet many sophisticated interiors are built over time through meaningful edits and refinement.

By introducing one thoughtful layer that changes the way everything else is perceived you may find, you don’t need a full renovation all in one go.

We live in a culture that constantly encourages us to start again, but there is something rather beautiful about choosing to elevate what is already there.
