5 upgrades to transform your space (without renovating)
It can be tempting to want to rip things out and start again…I feel like this almost daily. The idea of renovating can feel alluring but not always practical from a time or budget perspective.
Plus, sometimes working with what we’ve got is all part of the style challenge that keeps things interesting and pushes us to opt for design elements we usually wouldn’t go for.
Living in the world of interiors and lifestyle design, I’m constantly pulled to refresh my space and this occurs even after being super considerate and deliberate in how I bring a scheme together. But, the reality is, even with a renovation there is only so far I can stretch my current home. It will never be the ‘dream’ house but there are so many little corners that I can create dream moments in.
So, with that being said, if you’re like me and a full gut and rebuild is currently off the cards, or you just want to breathe new life into aspects of your interiors - here are 5 upgrades that can easily transform your space without getting out the sledge hammer.
These options can be as cost effective as you want them to be, and over time, you can layer in additional elements to create a truly refined and collected interior.
Paint
Paint is the ultimate refresher when it comes to giving your home a lift. Picking a paint scheme that develops mood and atmosphere can dramatically enhance the energy in your space. There are endless possibilities when it comes to colour and technique from limewash to colour drenching, or a more classic application.

Lighting
Lighting is the holy grail of any home. It not only changes the way you use a room, it also cultivates warmth and ambience. To me, lighting and art are the same thing. In a typical space I like to include a hero floor lamp - something that’s bold, commanding and adds personality. Then, a sculptural piece either in the form of a pendant, downlight, sconce or secondary table or bench lamp. Layer your lighting to include multiple shapes and materials that add texture and interest such as fabrics, ceramics, plaster, metals and so on.
Art
With a fabulous paint scheme and some stunning lighting features, if you’re able to pop some art on your wall, then really, you can call it a day! You’ll feel renewed and elevated just with these first three changes. Art is important because it adds personality, evokes emotions and sparks conversations. It’s the icing on the cake when pulling a tonal colour scheme together, and it anchors a room’s style by crossing borders, eras and cultural relevance. The art you pick and where you put it can add value beyond measure.

A rug
Rugs are so underrated but they’re super grounding and can be the cherry on top when it comes to tying an interior scheme together. Not only do rugs create warmth and comfort, they’re yet another avenue to express personality and style. Be it the main character or the supporting act, the right rug will frame your space to create structure and uniformity with visual zones that speak to all other design elements.
Hardware
Hardware is an easy way to instantly add luxe to a room. A cohesive hardware story across your space can create depth, dimension and designer appeal. It takes stock standard to a feeling of ultra customisation.
A mood board to map out metals, colours and key swap outs is a practical process to establish where to go bold, and where to pair things back. Hardware changes worth looking into can be light and plug switch plates, cabinet handles and knobs, taps and showerheads.

Final tips
So there you have it. Those are the 5 upgrades that I think will make the most difference to a home without renovating. Again, these design elements can be budget controlled and introduced slowly over time.
If you’re looking to take things one step further, I’d next assess key furniture choices that will give your interiors that straight-out-of-a-magazine pop. Then, window treatments such as drapes or blinds can make a remarkable difference too!
The biggest tip with all of this is even if you roll out changes over time, go into it with a clear vision and interior scheme. Think about the key colours, materials, metals, textures and layouts you want to go with. Then, stick with your scheme to ensure your room comes together feeling cohesive and balanced.
Don't forget to measure your spaces and check out specifications on products before you buy to make sure they’re items that are in line with your vision and most importantly, values.
